Strong Museum Announces 2019 World Video Game Hall of Fame Inductees

So, it has just come to my attention that the Strong Museum of Play has announced their 2019 World Video Game Hall of Fame inductees. It has also just come to my attention that the Strong Museum of Play has a World Video Game Hall of Fame in the first place. I don’t know how this flew over my head all these years, but here we are.

This is the fifth class of inductees to the MOPVGHOF (which really rolls off the tongue), and past inductees include Super Mario Bros, World of Warcraft, Halo: CE, Tomb Raider, Space Invaders, and about a dozen others. This year’s class consists of Mortal Kombat, Solitaire, Super Mario Kart, and Colossal Cave Adventure for Commodore 64.

I gotta tell ya, this is an absolute haymaker of a class. In an era where most lists are garbage and almost everyone has an awful opinion on everything (just check Twitter for any subject if you don’t believe me), this list is a banger. The only game I haven’t played on here is Colossal Cave Adventure, but I understand that it was a pioneer on bring a Dungeons & Dragons-like experience to home computers, setting the groundwork for generations of future dungeon crawling, open world, treasure hunt-focused roleplaying games.

Mortal Kombat is one of my favorite franchises ever, and though I can’t say the first two are even close to my favorites, MK1’s importance and impact cannot be understated. Countless developers have tried and failed to replicate the magic of Super Mario Kart and it’s sequels for decades, and Solitaire deserves a separate Hall of Fame building entirely.

Having said all of that, I’m still hung up on the fact that this museum just all of a sudden has the “official” game hall of fame. Who gets to decide that? Like could I start my own and just say that this is the real one? Is this like boxing where there’s like 16 different federations and nobody really knows which titles actually matter? No idea. Congrats to all the inductees though, this honor is well deserved regardless of who it comes from.
