The New Pokémon Sun and Moon Starters, Ranked

Let me tell you something right now. I’ve been a Grass-type guy since day one. My very first time playing Pokémon Red, I said to my 8-year old self – “man, thats a little baby dinosaur with a plant on its back – I bet its gonna be badass” – and the rest was history. I’ve largely stuck to my roots (pun absolutely intended, sorry) when it comes to the other games, selecting the Grass starter by default every time. Have I always loved the designs of the Grass types? Absolutely not. But am I staying loyal to the soil (sorry again) this time around with Pokémon Sun and Moon? Well you’re about to find out.

2.) LittenScreen Shot 2016-05-11 at 5.20.48 PM

Do you have any idea how hard it is for me to not select a starter with “Lit” RIGHT in the name? It’s almost like Nintendo made this Pokémon just for me. Not only that, but I bet that its gonna grow up to be a badass, nonchalant-looking cat that can shoot fire from its whiskers and shit. It pains me to say this, because Litten looks cool as fuck and I’d absolutely pet the SHIT out of him, but there is only one clear choice among these three…

Rhetorical question: Is this the greatest Grass starter in franchise history? Like I almost wanna give up the honors to Bulbasaur for nostalgia’s sake but Rowlet looks unbelievable. Not only that, but its the only multi-type (Grass and Flying) among the bunch, and Flying is one of my other favorite types besides grass. Not only that, but LOOK at this little thing’s adorable bowtie. Are we taking cash bets on what the future evolutions are gonna look like yet? I’d bet real money that Rowlet evolves into a sick suit-wearing gentlemanly-as-fuck Owl mob boss. Like with a monocle and everything. Either that, or Nintendo will totally fuck this up and the leaf will end up on his head or some dumb shit. Regardless, Rowlet is the clear choice among the three and I might set the world record for fastest starter selection when Sun and Moon arrives.

So there you have it. You know my stance on the new Sun and Moon starters – so what’re your picks and why? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter at @WickedGoodGames.
