Universe Cosmically Balances Itself, Gives Us “Sonic the Hedgehog” Trailer
Well, folks. I guess we all kinda knew how this was gonna look. I have a few thoughts on this trailer, because honestly I don’t think it looks unwatchable, and while I can’t personally see myself going to see this opening weekend, I would definitely make time to watch it at home. Here’s some quick hits:
1.) James Marsden really should’ve been Paul Rudd or Chris Pratt. I’m not sure what the budget or timing looked like here with Endgame, but I would’ve much rather have seen them in this plucky unwilling sidekick gig. Plus, you can’t tell me you can’t picture Paul Rudd trying to describe Sonic to someone else and NOT laugh hysterically.
2.) In my opinion, Robotnik and Sonic both look good. In the words of our good pal Johnny Rootbeer, thank god for those poster leaks. If we didn’t see Sonic ahead of time, I think his appearance would be pretty jarring. Jim Carrey looks great as Robotnik (especially at the end of the trailer), and I can’t wait to see what kind of insanity he brings to the screen. He’s gonna sell this movie for a lot of people, including me.
3.) People are bitching on Twitter (shocking, I know) that Sonic’s rings are being used to teleport places. Big rings are used in the games to teleport into bonus stages and other areas, so I don’t see what the issue is there. Plus, Sonic’s on Earth right now. While I never considered him an “alien”, he is from “Mobius” in the comics and cartoons, so I can see them getting back there at some point – which is probably the crazy mushroom planet we see behind Robotnik at the end.
4.) There was no reality in which this movie didn’t look this goofy. This was never going to be the Citizen Kane of video game motion pictures. I think everyone needs to take this trailer with a teeny grain of salt and wait for more before we all get up in arms.
5.) I really, really hope that 90% of Sonic’s lines aren’t just him quoting outdated memes.
