Here’s A Review Of The Last Month Of My Own Life

Hey folks, the last month or so has been the busiest time of my life.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted a real, substantial blog. The Madden update could’ve just been a Tweet, I know.

Truth is, life’s been pretty crazy. Me, Chris, and Bob try not to use that as a crutch or an excuse – because we all have 9-5s and are always all very busy, but it’s also good to be transparent and honest with the people who take time out of their day to read this website. So yeah, life’s been busy – but also pretty damn good! There’s been ups and downs, milestones and setbacks, but overall a whole lot to do (and celebrate), but not much time to do it.

I just figured I’d post a quick ‘life blog’ to do two things: 1.) actually stay in touch with the readers of this website, who I value more than you’ll ever know and 2.) give you a rare peek behind the curtain at what we actually do in our every day lives. I don’t like being quiet (as you probably know if you listen to the podcast), so here’s a quick, rambling life update for anybody who cares to read through it.

We bought a (real) house!

This has been basically my entire year. Every weekend, like 2-5 times per weekend, we’ve been looking at house after house. We probably saw an upwards of 30-40 houses, and put in six offers before finally getting our seventh offer accepted. I could not have done this without my incredible wife, and without Chris’ professional help. Needless to say, we’re all pretty happy.

It felt pretty great to sign Purchase & Sale on a house with my wife before both of us hit the big 3-0, but the amount of work in renovating, painting, buying new furniture, organizing a move, and all the other awesome-yet-mind melting logistics involved have been the primary weight on my brain lately. On the extra plus side, I’m going to have a huge new office at the house, which I absolutely cannot wait to deck out.

Next week will be the first episode of Not Another Gaming Podcast that I’ll be broadcasting from the new place, and I can’t wait. It’s bittersweet, knowing that all 193 episodes of NAGP so far have been done right at this very desk, in this office, in this apartment – but the time has come to move onwards and upwards, and I can’t wait for all the incredible things that this new life milestone is going to bring.

My favorite bar closed.

On the minus side, my favorite bar closed. McGreevys on Boylston Street in Boston was my favorite watering hole for the last eight or so years, and was basically my dorm in college. No, seriously. My school (right around the block) didn’t have dorms, so in between (and after) most classes, McGreevys was where you could find me.

The staff at McGreevys was always incredibly kind, caring, hospitable, and everything a neighborhood sports bar should be. In truth, it kind of never fit on Boylston St. – which is surrounded by bougie high rises, high-end retail, and big shot offices. It was the perfect bar – it was “my” bar, and I am so sad to see it go.

Fun story, McGreevys played home to the very first official WGG “charter” meeting, where Chris, Bob, and myself all met up, discussed our plans for the website and podcast to come, and sealed the deal with a shot of Jameson. A couple trillion words and 193 podcast episodes later, here we are.

Thanks for everything, McGreevys, I owe a lot of incredible memories, lifelong friendships, and more than a handful of late-night Lyft or train rides to you. RIP.

Shipyard Pumpkinheads came back!

Hey! While we’re on the topic of drinking, the best seasonal beer ever brewed is fucking BACK. Chris and myself grabbed a couple of these bad boys a few weeks ago, and let me tell you right now – I’m ready to bust out the flannels, fall candles, and cinnamon sugar.

I don’t give a shit if you think it’s too early for a Pumpkinhead. 2020 has been an absolute cluster-fuck (are you supposed to hyphenate that?) of the highest order, and nothing makes sense anyway. Besides, time is a social construct and “seasonal flavors” are a marketing ploy.

Go get a pumpkin beer, have the bartender slap a nice thick rim on that bad boy, and enjoy yourself.

There’s lots of games to play!

Goddamn, my backlog is getting bad.

I was already pretty sucked into Destiny 2, and then the house process started to ramp up so that completely fell by the wayside. Our regular Pathfinder 2 campaign via Roll20 is still going, but it just isn’t the same as playing in person. I’ve also got to finish Paper Mario: The Origami King, and still find time to quest with the rest of our WGG community in The Elder Scrolls Online.

Final Verdict:

The Good: Bought a house, Celtics and Bruins are winning their playoff series’, and everyone’s happy and healthy over here.

The Bad: The 2020 Boston Red Sox, McGreevys closing for good.

The Ugly: My gaming backlog.

In conclusion, life’s been pretty solid for the last few months. I’ll get back to my regular blogging game very soon, so don’t you worry about that. In the meantime, just bear with me while I move into my new house, cross some t’s, dot some lower-case j’s, and get my head back on straight.

If you made it all the way through this blog, just know that I love you, and value your readership and the fact that you take time out of your life to hear and read what we have to say. I promise we’ll never let you down.

La Luna.
