EA Confirms Three New Star Wars Titles Are In Development At Respawn

In an announcement posted to their blog this morning, EA has confirmed that there are not one, not two, but three new Star Wars titles currently in development at Respawn Entertainment.

Game Director Stig Asmussen and his team at the studio are already working on the next game in the action adventure Star Wars Jedi series, and are joined by two new teams working to deliver additional unique Star Wars gameplay experiences across multiple genres. Leading the development of Respawn’s all-new Star Wars first-person shooter game is Peter Hirschmann, Game Director at Respawn, who has a long and accomplished history with the Star Wars franchise. The third title is a Star Wars strategy game developed through a production collaboration with the newly formed studio Bit Reactor, helmed by games industry veteran Greg Foerstch. Respawn will produce the new Star Wars strategy game while Bit Reactor leads on the development of the title.

Electronic Arts & Lucasfilm Games announce new Star Wars titles from Respawn Entertainment

So we’ve got three new titles on the way – one we probably could’ve predicted, but the other two that come as a huge surprise.

First off, we’ve got a new title in the “Star Wars Jedi” series, which likely means a sequel to 2019 GOTY Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. If they had just announced that, I would’ve been perfectly fine. But let’s talk about these other two. We’ve got a new strategy title on the way from Respawn and and BitReactor, the latter of which is a newly formed studio comprised of former XCOM and Civilization developers. I was recently told by a friend that the last Star Wars strategy title – Empire at War – is still alive to this very day thanks to the modding community, and it looks like EA has taken notice. I’ve been craving a new strategy title set in the Star Wars universe for a long time, and I cannot wait to see what they come up with.

Last but not least, we have a new first-person shooter directed by none other than formed LucasArts VP Peter Hirschmann. Does this name ring a bell to you? If not, let me know if these titles do: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, LEGO Star Wars, Star Wars: Battlefront (2004), Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005). Yup. Some of the most beloved Star Wars video games of all time have had Peter Hirschmann at the helm, and this new FPS will be no different. Hirschmann added a quote of his own to the announcement, stating that “Working with Lucasfilm Games on a new FPS in the Star Wars galaxy is a dream come true for me, as this is a story I have always wanted to tell”.

You guys know me well enough by now to know how I’m feeling. I don’t really need to go in-depth here, but needless to say I’m incredibly excited and optimistic to see what these new Star Wars experiences turn out to be. They are likely all a ways off, but just knowing we have three new, distinct games in the pipeline is good enough for me for now.
