The Playstation State of Play Wicked Good Recap
Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo to the demise of many a video game con, have in recent years had some sort of direct livestream to bring news to their fans. Yesterday, Playstation had their most recent take on the live and direct news drop approach, the State of Play. Playstation covered their new VR games for Playstation VR 2. Which dropped earlier in the year to low sales, for what I assume has been a very light amount of advertising and consumer awareness. I’m going to swing through all of the smaller games with some quick details, like I did in the Nintendo Direct blog before. Then hit you with some fine facts on the heavy AAA hitters.
The Foglands – Coming 2023
First up, we got The Foglands by developer Well Told. It’s a VR horror FPS that’s got a western cowboy theme. It seems like you’ll be facing a lot of ghoulish enemies and using your environment to fight off hordes of enemies.
Green Hell VR – Coming 2023
This next one seems to be a VR port of a non-VR game that’s released already. Green Hell VR is a survival and crafting game from developer Creepy Jar. The player is stranded in a Farcry like jungle setting and you’ll need to craft shelter, tools, and stay alive to progress.
Synapse – Coming 2023
From the makers of Fracked, Phantom: Covert Ops, and Farcry VR: Dive Into Insanity. Developer nDreams is coming out with another VR FPS, but it seems you’ll be using some psychic abilities to help you defeat heavily geared enemies.
Journey to Foundation – Coming Autumn 2023
In this RPG based on the Foundation books by Isaac Asimov. Archiact studio brings you to a VR world with a rich lore and story based on sci-fi novels. An empire is falling, humanity is in danger, and it’s up to you to save it.
Before Your Eyes – Releasing March 10th 2023
Published by Skybound Games and developed by Goodbyeworld Games. Before Your Eyes is a game where life literally happens in a blink of an eye. You can take snapshots of things to “blink” forward in time to specific moments in your past life. This Bafta award winner is being ported to VR and releases March 10th.
That’s all the VR titles that were shown in this State of Play, from here on out I’ll be talking about the traditional video game titles. We got a lot from Capcom, and some neat indie games, but what catches my eye the most is Street Fighter 6 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Destiny 2: Lightfall – Releasing February 28th 2023
Hot off the press from Bungie is their launch trailer for Lightfall featuring a cloud-man like villain, and the traveler being threatened yet again. Destiny 2: Lightfall will feature a new “strand” subclass for players, and a ton of new content.
Tchia – Releasing March 21st 2023
Tchia, which sounds like Chia to me, is an island themed adventure game inspired by New Caledonia. You can travel the sea and it’s islands Windwaker style, glide around environments, and see the world as various animals. Tchia is launching into the Playstation Plus catalog on March 21st.
Humanity – Coming May 2023 – Demo Available until March 6th
Now this looks like an interesting game by Enhance, the creators of Tetris effect. Your player character wakes up as a dog, and is suddenly able to herd humans across various platforming puzzles. There’s some horde combat that you can take on with your horde of humans. In addition to a level editor where you can build and share levels you made with the world. The demo is available on www.humanity.game for PS5, PS4, PSVR, PSVR2, and Steam until March 6th.
Goodbye Volcano High – Releases June 15th 2023
You know, it’s been a while since I’ve heard about this game. The anthropomorphic beak looking animal people with enough angst to power a small town, star in this Telltale style game. Apparently it seems that there’s an end of the world scenario about to happen, and people are big sad. Focused around the dynamics of a high school band, you’ll come across rhythm prompts along with your regular story based branches from any visual novel you may have played before. Goodbye Volcano High by KO_OP games is out June 15th.
Naruto X Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections – Coming 2023
One of the OG top Shonen franchises is back with a huge compilation of every Ultimate Ninja Storm game baked into one. With all the ninjas, features, story, and more of all the previous Ultimate Ninja Storm games. They’ve also teased some new characters joining the roster!
Baldur’s Gate 3 – Releases August 31st, 2023
It’s finally almost here! The acclaimed D&D RPG series is set to release in August, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The tactical RPG in the style of Divinity: Original Sin is set in the large universe of Dungeons and Dragons, and should be a treat for any D&D fan.
Wayfinder – TBA – Beta coming for PS5/4 Only February 28th
Wayfinder, an online multiplayer adventure game by Airship Syndicate set in the sci-fi fantasy world of Evanor. Players will fight in third person combat using “Wayfinders” like Senja, a fighter who gets up close and personal. Psyllium, who fights with their guns and unique movement abilities. Then there’s Windrave, a support character that does some nice damage and protects the party. Players will visit a social hub called Skylight, loot and battle in dungeons, and collect wayfinders to complete their collection. Wayfinder has no set release date as of yet, but will have a beta starting on the 28th for all Playstation 4 and 5 owners.
Before I go into the heavy hitters, I want to first dust over what Playstation Plus users are getting this month.
Playstation Plus for March
Playstation Plus users will have access to Battlefield 2042, Minecraft Dungeons, and Code Vein for the month of March. Along with Rainbow Six: Extraction, Tchia, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Ghostwire Tokyo, and Immortals Fenyx Rising, will be coming to the game catalog for Plus members to play whenever.
Now, here’s the big games everyone wants to hear about.
Street Fighter 6 – Releases June 2nd 2023
Oh man, the FGC is eating in 2023. Street Fighter 6 arrives soon with some new and returning characters! This time we got a reveal trailer for Cammy sporting a new look, Zangief in all his wrestling glory, and a new character reveal. Lily is a young indigenous girl of the Thunderfoot Tribe, armed with two huge stone ball clubs and a camera to catch you slipping in 4k.
Resident Evil 4 Remake – Releases March 24th 2023
We’ve got a really big trailer for RE4 Remake. However there’s still no Ramon Salazar shown, that beautiful Napoleon-like bastard! We’ve got some good over the shoulder camera action, and Ashely showing off a new and less revealing look. Luis Sera returns as a supporting character who’s full of great one liners. The Mercenaries mode was teased to be coming to the game as well! A demo is also announced to be coming soon!
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – Coming 2023
Out of all the titles shown, this one has had the most in depth coverage here. In the DC Arkham-verse, 5 years after Arkham Knight, the Suicide Squad is tasked to deal with a corrupted Justice League. Metropolis has been invaded by Brainiac, and the Justice League has become a huge threat to the world. You can take on the role of Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, King Shark, and of course Harley Quinn. Harley does her Harley Quinn thing by zipping around, and using gadgets and guns to take out enemies. Captain Boomerang teleports by throwing his boomerang, and Deadshot can use his jetpack for some aerial combat. King Shark can leap across buildings and smash into things super hard like the Hulk!
The Suicide Squad is not completely alone against the Justice League though! They have a “Support Squad” which includes a familiar face along with a few fresh ones. The Penguin appears as a “arms stealer” who will collect and sell guns to the Suicide Squad. Hack, a “digital ghost” will help the Squad explore the world and upgrade their bombs. Toyman, a funny looking toy obsessed guy helps the squad with perfecting their gear, and finally there’s Gizmo. An engineer who helps the Suicide Squad with creating vehicles that blow stuff up!
