Netflix has been cranking out original content in the past couple of years. Countless exclusive series, new stand-up comedy specials, even revivals and exclusive seasons of already beloved TV shows are coming to Netflix. Now, they’re currently in the process of shelling out $90 million for a single film. You might be asking yourself… Why in the fuck would they do that? Weeeeeeeelll it might have something to do with the leading man – Mr. Will Smith.
David Ayer (Suicide Squad) is set to direct for Bright, a new fantasy action film, which looks like Training Day meets Dungeons & Dragons. In the trailer above, we see light blue-skinned elves, cops blockading city streets, Will Smith brandishing a rusty sword, and an orc (played by Joel Edgerton) checking down the sights of a pump-action shotgun in somebody’s face.
Fine details about the film are not yet clear, but according to Engadget, Netflix is looking make Bright into a franchise. In a world where Game of Thrones is one of, if not the most popular show on television, Will Smith’s Bright could very well begin a new franchise of dark fantasy for the masses to obsess over. The D&D/fantasy nerd in me is truly hoping there’s some insanely deep lore behind the movie, and I hope the movie’s producers know that fans of the genre will be clamoring for it too.
