Nobody Has a Fucking Clue What Kind of Game “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” Is
Yesterday, Sony kicked off their presser with an Amazing (Spectacular! Ultimate! Superior! …You get the drift) trailer for Spider-Man: Miles Morales. It ruled, and everyone was excited.
Many, including myself, thought this game was a straight-up sequel to the instant-classic PS4 open-world exclusive, but shortly after the presser, an absolute cluster fuck* of confusion hit the internet about what the nature of this new title actually was.
For those keeping score at home, in those four tweets, we have “it’s an expansion”, “it’s a standalone game”, “it’s an expansion within a remaster”, and “it’s not an expansion or a remaster, it’s a standalone game”. Anybody else’s brain feel like it’s in a pretzel right now?
It seems like the final verdict is that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is, indeed, a standalone title – albeit at a smaller scale. This doesn’t sound super different from titles like GTA Lost and Damned, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, and others.
My biggest issue here is that Sony led off with this blockbuster teaser to a much anticipated sequel, only to tell us not only is it NOT a sequel, but that it runs off the same engine as the PS4 game and is basically an upscaled, smaller-scope spinoff.
Sony chose to lead off a presser literally titled “THE FUTURE OF GAMING”, with a confusing, deceptive look at a game they’ve now spent the last 12 hours explaining. If this is what the “future” holds, I’m not impressed.
*Editor’s Note: Auto-correct tells me “cluster fuck” is two words, but I’ve always written it as one. Can we get a ruling on this from the Webster’s Dictionary guys?
