Fortnite’s Ballistic Game Mode Makes Me Feel Like I’m Playing Peak Counter Strike Again
Well, it happened. Fortnite made a better Counter-Strike before Valve could salvage the mess that is “Counter-Strike 2.” I played a few matches today, and I love the feel of it. I hated what Valve did to CS. It just didn’t feel right since they replaced CS:GO with the “upgrade” that is CS2. It just feels off. The netcode feels off, the gamemodes are weak, the balance feels weak—everything about it just doesn’t feel like the glory days of Counter-Strike.
I’ve played Counter-Strike since I was able to play Source back in the early days at an internet cafe. I didn’t play much until CS:GO came out because, until then, I didn’t have a PC that could handle it. But with CS:GO and The Orange Box lauching on the Xbox 360 at the time, it was like I was put through a gateway to become a PC gamer.
Fortnite has added several new game modes by Epic itself and has been having a sort of second Renaissance in the past few years. They added Zero Build, Festival (the Rock Band/Guitar Hero mode), LEGO Fortnite “Odyssey,” a survival Minecraft/Valheim-like game, Reload, a fast-paced, smaller version of Battle Royale, and way more. We’ve even got a GTA clone coming in LEGO form on December 12. So when I saw they were adding a tactical FPS like Counter-Strike, I had to play it as soon as it launched, and oh boy does it feel tight.
Unreal Engine 5 and the ease of just moving things around in Fortnite’s creative tools are giving Epic the chance to outclass every type of game out there without much hassle. Everything is already built on the platform for them and other creators. It’s just a matter of putting it together the way you want. Even Disney has been partnering with Fortnite to create a gaming universe, and it seems to be working out so far.
Hate on Fortnite if you want. I used to be a hater as well. I learned to love Fortnite after Zero Build was released. So give it a shot! It’s free, so what do you have to lose?
