Happy Monday: Xbox Acquires ZeniMax Media, Bethesda Softworks

In a stunning blog post that seemingly dropped out of the clear blue sky on a Monday morning, Xbox has announced that they have acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks.

In what can only be described as an absolute blockbuster acquisition, Team Xbox now has eight additional, and incredible, new “first party” franchises under its belt. Fallout and Wolfenstein alone are haymakers, but considering what Bethesda has in the works for Starfield and Elder Scrolls? This is nothing short of a colossal chess move in the battle for first-party supremacy.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer says that they’ll be sharing more details on the acquisition and what’s to come in a few weeks, and adds that this is something they’ve been building towards “for years”.

Congratulations to the incredible teams at ZeniMax and Bethesda. We’ve had the pleasure of meeting lots of folks on those teams over the years, and I can honestly say that I’m so excited for such a great group of people to have such exciting personal and professional news to look forward to.

Update: Per Bloomberg, Microsoft’s purchase of ZeniMax Media Inc. was for $7.5 BILLION, its biggest video game purchase ever. That’s three billion MORE than what Disney bought Star Wars for.
