Wants, Needs, and Expectations for Today’s Nintendo Direct
Nintendo has a long, storied history of incredible announcements. It also has had more than a handful of absolutely abysmal ones.
For all the shit that they get for sometimes keeping fans in the dark, Nintendo holds more than a few presentations per year. Nintendo Directs, Pokemon Directs, Indie Directs, and Treehouses happen multiple times per year, but quantity doesn’t always equate to quality.
This year’s biggest Nintendo Direct, during E3, is going down today at Noon (ET). Nintendo set the expectation that the showcase will last for about 40 minutes, and will be followed by one of their “Treehouse” presentations with about three hours of gameplay footage. With tons of huge titles on the horizon, expectations across the board are pretty high.
Before I get to my prediction list, here’s an embed to the official stream, so you can see my list crumble in real time!
And now… The pain.
Wants
- A new Starfox title
- A new 3D Donkey Kong title
- A true Virtual Console on Switch
- Geno in Smash
I don’t think I’m being unrealistic here! We haven’t had a 3D Donkey Kong title since Nintendo 64, and we haven’t had a new Starfox title in five years! I would absolutely love for Nintendo to even revive one of these franchises in a major way, but who really knows what’ll happen.
In terms of a Virtual Console, let me be clear – I’m perfectly happy to pay for retro games again that I’ve already bought elsewhere. Even on the Wii. I do not care. There’s no reason for the Nintendo Switch – the ultimate portable gaming machine – to not have the power of Nintendo’s insanely massive retro library behind it. C’mon guys.
Also, I’m not even going to address the last bullet point. You’ve heard me rant enough about that already. #WheresGeno
Needs
- Breath of the Wild 2 gameplay
- Metroid Prime 4 ANYTHING
- A tease for the next big Mario title
- Super Nintendo Switch
Again, nothing too outrageous here folks! Breath of the Wild 2 was announced two years ago, and we’ve heard nothing since. Metroid Prime 4 was announced half a decade ago and all we’ve seen is a logo. All we are asking for is some information! What is the problem!!
As far as “needs” that are lower on the totem pole, I’d really think that its past time that we should have heard about an all-new Mario title. I’m not asking for gameplay or even a teaser cinematic, but a logo reveal or something would be great.
Also, just show us the next console already Nintendo. We know its coming, so just give us a break and show the damn thing.
Expectations
Nintendo’s E3 Direct goes live at Noon ET, right here.
